LOCATION: Swellendam Area

Located in the beautiful Overberg region near Swellendam, Tides River Lodge is surrounded by rolling wheat fields, vibrant yellow canola landscapes, peaceful farm dams, winding gravel roads, and wide open countryside that feels both dramatic and deeply calming. Late August is one of the most spectacular times of year in the Overberg, as the winter rains transform the region into a patchwork of lush green hills and glowing canola fields, while the wheat fields begin adding rich texture and layers to the landscape. Combined with moody winter weather systems, soft light, misty mornings, and the full moon during the retreat dates, the area offers endless opportunities for landscape photography, cinematic video work, and creative storytelling. Tides River Lodge itself provides a luxurious and peaceful retreat atmosphere, with beautifully designed accommodation and stunning surroundings that allow guests to fully relax, slow down creatively, and immerse themselves in both learning and the natural beauty of the Overberg.

To ensure a relaxed, personal, and highly hands-on learning experience, the retreat will be limited to just 6–8 guests. This allows for plenty of individual guidance in the field, more in-depth editing support, and a far more immersive creative environment throughout the retreat.

Kyle Goetsch will lead the photography, composition, and editing side of the retreat, covering practical field techniques, storytelling through imagery, Lightroom and Photoshop workflows, and how to create stronger, more intentional photographs.

Including Videography

For the first time, this retreat will include a dedicated videography component, reflecting the growing importance of cinematic storytelling alongside photography.

Many photographers want to start creating video content but feel overwhelmed by filming techniques, camera setup, movement, and editing workflows. The goal of this retreat is to simplify the process and give guests practical, hands-on guidance in the field.

Joining me will be Jacques Grobler, a South African filmmaker and photographer with a background in high-performance sport, cinematic storytelling, and premium content creation. Alongside years spent producing films for elite athletes and brands around the world, Jacques has also photographed wildlife and remote landscapes throughout Southern Africa, bringing a refined story-first approach to filmmaking in natural environments.

Jacques will guide guests through:

  • Camera setup for video

  • Cinematic shooting techniques

  • Best angles and movement in the field

  • Capturing compelling B-roll

  • Storytelling through motion

  • Editing workflows in DaVinci Resolve

The focus is on making videography approachable, practical, and creatively inspiring for photographers wanting to expand into visual storytelling.
